One of my students favourite way to integrate technology into the classroom is to use Kahoot.

For our last round of PBL this year, the grade 6 students had to complete the scientific method with an experiment of their choosing. Here are some pictures from one groups experiment. They were trying to determine which type of candy created the most cotton candy. They needed to identify all elements of the scientific method and ensure it was a fair test. Along with these pictures they created a tri-fold, and google presentation with videos from their experiment. One focus at our school is Project Based Learning. Each grade gets the opportunity to do three rounds of PBL. Each project is about three weeks long and the students are given a driving question and they need to create a project around that. So far the Grade 6 has completed two rounds. The first was centered around Evidence and Investigation where they needed to develop a crime scene and develop evidence that suits their crime. The second was around establishing a healthy lifestyle. The second one was left pretty open for the students to decide what direction to take. We had many that chose to do healthy eating, some tackled mental health and wellness, while others looked at physical activity. Students were able to work with other classes and collaborate in new groups. We had many groups create Google presentations or videos to show their understanding, and some groups developed their own cookbook. It is amazing to see how creative and purposeful so many presentations were. For the second round of PBL students were assessed on their ability to work collaboratively, as well if they understood and explained why it is important to live a healthy lifestyle. This project really brought the school culture together as we were intermixing all grade 6 classes. It was extraordinary to watch them develop and create together.
Although AISI is no longer a program in schools, at Agnes Davidson they still have so funds that have carried over into this current year. The staff is still able to have grade level planning meetings to further their professional learning. Last week I was able to be apart of one of these meetings. The grade 5 teachers all got together to develop a SmartBoard lesson for the fraction unit in Math. We spent the morning going over what the pertinent information was and what needed to be taught to the students based on the Program of Studies. The lessons were designed to help keep the students engaged, use of technology, and reference to their workbooks.
Today was my third day in PSII and I decided to incorporate some technology into the class. I feel as though in high school there are groups of students that want to work together all of the time, and when you seperate them they are unhappy with you. So, to try and avoid this I wanted to make the choosing of teams as random as possible. This is where I incorporated my iPad. I downloaded an app called "team shake". This app allows me to create teams quickly and at random. The other nice thing about the app is you can get the app to consider sex of the student as well as skill level if you want to distinguish teams that way. Team shake allows you to take attendance. If a student is marked absent they will not be incorporated into the teams.
This week we are playing tchoukball and after yesterdays class I felt as though the students were not able to visualize what the actual game looks like. Today I was able to play a video on my iPad so the class was able to see the speed and strategy the sport needs to be more engaging. This is an example of my use of technology in the classroom. I created a jeopardy game for my grade 4 class to review a pully and gear unit. Creating the game was a little time consuming but kept the entire class completely engaged and excited to participate the entire class. When using technology in the classroom make sure you always have a back-up plan incase the technology does not work. I created a poster board of the game just incase the smart board was not working.
